The main source of drinking water in Hong Kong comes from Dongjiang Raw Water supplied from China. Historical quality data of Dongjiang Raw Water and drinking water published by the Water Supplies Department of Hong Kong Government has shown that most parameters have been in compliance with the reference standards. Yet there are still loud concerns about the consistent, if not deteriorating, quality of Dongjiang Raw Water.

However, it is our poor plumbing and water storage systems that add most contaminants to our drinking water. These contaminants include dissolved metals, organic matters like bacteria and viruses from the pipes or tanks. Hong Kong may have the world-class water treatment plant. Yet our water distribution networks could be working against our health.
